Abstract
927,498. Making tin-plate; rolling. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. March 13, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 9655/62. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of producing light gauge tinplate a continuous strip 1 of low carbon steel is rolled at 2 to a gauge 1.67 to 2.5 times greater than its required final size, alkaline cleaned, rinsed and dried at position 3 and bright annealed in a furnace 4 of the box, opencoiled or continuous type. The strip is then passed through an electro-tinning line 5 comprising, a cleaning unit 7, tin plating and rinsing tanks 8, 9, a drier 10, a furnace and quenching unit 11, a drier 12 and driver unit 13 to a recoiler 14. The strip is plated to a thickness 1.67 to 2.5 times greater than that required on the final product. Subsequently the strip is passed through a cold-reducing mill 15 comprising two stands 16, 17 tensioning devices 18, pairs of coolant-lubricating nozzles 21, 24, lubricating film-regulating rolls 22 and a hotair drier 23 and reduced to its final gauge. It is preferable that at least 1% but not more than 20% of the total reduction effected by the mill 15 is carried out by the stand 17. The work rolls at stand 17 preferably comprise a top roll crowned 0.001 inch and paired with a cylindrical bottom roll both with a sand or shotblasted finish whilst the rolls at stand 16 are 0.001 inch concave and smooth. In both stands the back up rolls have a 0.003 inch crown. A fixed speed ratio is maintained between the two stands by a known electrical means to keep the strip in a taut condition. Preferably the lubricants are straight or water-emulsified palm oil or cotton-seed oil For matt finished material requiring an alloy layer at the steeltin interface the strip is heated to about 500‹ F. in the furnace 11 and water quenched prior to the cold reduction step whilst for mirror-finished plate the heating is carried out after cold rolling in which case the furnace unit 11 is positioned between the cleaning and treating units 32, 33. The strip is finally cleaned, treated to prevent discoloration and recoiled or cut into sheet form.
