Abstract

<PICT:0926952/III/1> <PICT:0926952/III/2> Apparatus for applying liquid comprises a transfer roller 1 for transferring liquid to a co-operating applicator roller 4, which applies the liquid to sheet material, the transfer roller being provided with one or more fine helical projections 6, or with a series of fine ring projections, so that pressure between the rollers can be confined to spaced points or highly localized areas, and shallow liquid-retaining channels are present on the surface of the transfer roller. The projections may consist of a winding or rings of a thread or filament of a tough hardwearing plastic such as nylon, and the roller may be grooved to receive these, or be sand-blasted. The transfer roller may dip into a trough 2 of the liquid. A similar arrangement may be provided on both sides of the sheet, to coat both surfaces thereof. The applicator rollers may be provided with a soft or yielding p surface.
