A rotary duplicating machine for printing lines or sections from a master printing sheet on to a copy sheet in immediate succession or at a closer relative spacing than the lines or sections on the printing master sheet comprises two printing members one of which includes a plurality of pressure segments, and the one or the other printing member carries a printing master sheet with lines or sections thereof extending in an axial direction, each pressure segment being provided with control means adapted to move it so that part thereof extends out of the general periphery of the said one or other printing member, electromagnetically operable means being provided for engaging the control means to cause extension of the segments as they move into the line of printing between the printing members and means being provided for actuating the engaging means so that only. the control means of selected lines or sections are engaged whereby printing of these lines or sections only is effected. A printing drum 1 has a printing master sheet 4 clamped thereon and is provided with a plurality of pressure segments 2, one for each line of the sheet 4. The segments 2 are held in peripheral line with the drum 1 by springs 37 and 38 and one provided with sensing rollers 33, 34 at their ends. Two electromagnets 6, 7 are provided adjacent the ends of the drum 1 and the armatures of the electromagnets carry cams 31, 32 which are urged by springs 35, 35a and 36, 36a, respectively towards the electromagnets 6, 7. Energization of the electromagnets 6 and 7 is controlled by a multi-position switch 12 having twenty-six fixed contacts K1-K26 corresponding to twenty-six segments 2 and twenty-six possible printing lines on the sheet 4. Keys T1-T26 of a manually settable key array are connected in series with the corresponding contacts K1-K26. Selection of one of the contacts K1-K26 by depressing one of the keys T1-T26 causes a short circuit to be applied to the input of an amplifier supplying the electromagnets 6 and 7. Energization of the electromagnets causes the cams 31, 32 to act on the rollers 33, 34 of the selected segments 2 as they pass through the line of printing. Selective printing may in addition or as an alternative to the keys T1-T26 be effected using a photo-electric sensing device 3 which senses marks, Fig. 4 (not shown), on the master sheet and causes energization of the electromagnets 6, 7 through the contacts K1-K26.
