Abstract

926,619. Coating with aluminium. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Feb. 17, 1960, No. 5560/60. Class 82. The Specification relates to the coating of metal with molten aluminium and discloses two embodiments. In the first, excess aluminium is removed from the substrate by wiping with a device having a contacting surface of aluminium carbide or a silicide or boride of chromium, tungsten or titanium, and the coated metal then quickly chilled. As shown in Fig. 1, steel strip S is cleaned of surface oxides by being heated in hydrogen in chamber 11, before being passed through molten aluminium in bath 14. Excess aluminium is removed by wiping rollers 19 (which are made by dipping graphitic carbon cylinders in aluminium to produce an aluminium carbide surface), and the coated strip CS then chilled by rollers 21. In the second embodiment, the molten aluminium is applied to the substrate by a device having a contacting surface of aluminium carbide or a silicide or boride of chromium, tungsten or titanium, and the coated metal then quickly chilled. As shown in Fig. 4, steel strip S is passed between coating rolls 40, chilling rolls 46 and then chilled further in water bath 55. Rolls 41 take up molten aluminium from baths 42 and feed rolls 40 with this metal. Both rolls 40 and 41 have wettable surfaces of aluminium carbide &c.
