Abstract

A nickel-iron alloy containing 28-40% Fe and also sufficient of one or more of Mo, Cr, W and Mn to produce a resistivity in excess of 40 microhm. cm. is subjected to heat treatment in a magnetic field at a temperature between 400 DEG and 490 DEG C. for a time (not less than 6 hours) sufficient to impart a rectangular hysteresis loop to the material. The amounts of Mo, Cr, W or Mn should exceed 1.5%, 2%, 3% and 4% respectively. When both Mo and W are present these should exceed 1% each. The strength of the magnetic field should be at least ten times greater than the coercive field of the alloy.
