Abstract

925,677. Centrifugal separators. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Feb. 19, 1962 [March 9, 1961], No. 6250/62. Class 23. [Also in Group XXVI] In a continuous centrifugal clarifier a liquid suspension is conveyed to, and the clarified liquid removed from, a rotor 26 enclosed in a vacuum chamber 14, Fig. 1, through conduits 61, 62, Figs. 3 and 5, and non-rotary and rotary interengaging sealing members 92, 93 having communicating corresponding passages 99, 106 and 101, 110, one of the members being axially slidable and forced against the other member which is resiliently mounted. The member 93 is of P.T.F.E. and is supported by an 0-ring seal 96 against the end of the conduit 61. The member 92 is of copper and is engaged by a plug 108 provided with inlet and outlet tubes 111, 112 and passages 113, 114 and acted upon by an adjustable spring 123. A jacket 128 to which coolant is supplied and extracted through conduits 126, 127 surrounds the member 92. The real assembly is mounted in a housing 18 secured to the chamber 14 which may be provided with a lining 23 or with cooling coils. The conduits 61, 62 rotate with the rotor and are sealed where they enter the chamber 14 by a sleeve-type seal 21 through which coolant is circulated. The rotor consists of a core 47 drivingly connected by pins 50 to an outer shell 46 and formed with a neck 53 which sealingly receives the conduits 61, 62 and engages in a removable cap 51 screwed into the shell 46. The core is connected to a flexible shaft 27 which is journalled in an oil-filled bearing 34 and driven by a belt 41 and motor 39. In operation, the suspension is fed from the tube 113 through the passages 111, 106, 99 and the conduit 61 to a chamber 58 in the core 47 from which it passes through passages 57 into the separating chamber 48 in the rotor. The clarified liquid is removed through passages 69 and chamber 77 in the core and out through the conduit 62 via the passages 101, 110, 112 into the outlet tube 114. In a modification, the suspension is fed through the conduit 62 and the liquid removed through the conduit 61, these conduits communicating with appropriate passages in the core 47. Specification 899,543 is referred to.
