Abstract

701,511. Centrifugal pumps. HAYWARD TYLER & CO., Ltd., IVANHOFF, V., and KING, R. E. Oct. 30, 1950 [Nov. 1, 1949], No. 27953/49. Class 110 (1). [Also in Groups XXXIV and XXXV] In a submersible pump and motor combination adapted to pump hot fluid at a high initial pressure, the fluid having access to a casing enclosing the pump and motor, the rotors of which are mounted on a common shaft, said casing comprises three separate parts, namely, a middle part 4 carrying the pump and motor stators, a motorend part 5 and a pump-end part 6, each of the latter parts being in the form of a pot or dome. The casing is of massive construction. The pump stator 12, of relatively light construction, is bolted to a sleeve-like extension 15 of the middle part and to a shoulder 18 in the latter, the upper part of the stator being formed with small holes 19 allowing passage of fluid between the pump-end and middle parts. A circumferential seal 16 is provided between the sleeve 15 and the pump-end part to isolate the pump inlet 10 from the pump outlet 11. The pump shaft 3b is electrically insulated from the motor shaft 3a. A hardened steel spigot 37 welded to the pump shaft enters a socket 38 and is insulated from the latter by a sleeve 40 and washer 39, the socket being drawn down upon the washer by means of a nut 44 on the screwed end of the spigot, and being secured to the spigot by a pin 47 surrounded by an insulating sleeve 46. The spigoted end 36 of the motor shaft also enters the socket and is welded, thereto at 48. A sleeve 27 surrounding the junction of the shafts is bolted at its lower end to the middle part, the space between the sleeve and the pump stator being provided with baffles 76. The lower end of the sleeve contains a sludge gland 79 and the upper end a shaft bearing 31. Fluid passes through flutes 30 and ports 80 in the sleeve and over baffle vanes 28 on the latter. The sleeve 27 and baffles 76 are provided to reduce heat transfer between the pump and motor chambers. The middle part is formed externally with cooling vanes 9. The windings 14 of the motor stator are enclosed within a shell 13 bolted at its lower end to the middle part, and a light inner tube 61, the latter surrounding the rotor 1 a of the motor and being supported at its respective ends by plates 59 and 60 formed with passages 62 and 63 for the fluid. The electrical leads pass through the middle part at 25 and are coiled at 26 in the space below the plate 59. The plate 60 carries a journal bearing 32, a flange 64 of which overlies the plate and provides a foundation for a thrust bearing 55. The plate 60 also supports a ring 71 closed at its upper end by a plate 72 through an aperture 74 in which the end 73 of the motor shaft projects. The rotating elements 68 of the thrust bearing is formed on its upper surface with ridges 75 which function as centrifugal blades to recirculate fluid from the motor chamber through an external cooling device via pipes 57, 58 in the motor-end and middle parts respectively. In a modification the end of the motor shaft is bored to receive a spigoted end of the socket 38, the shaft and socket being welded together. In a further modification a spigoted end of the motor shaft, surrounded by an insulating sleeve, is shrink fitted into a bore in the end of the pump shaft, the bottom of the bores containing an insulating disc. Specifications 544,930, 595,956, 701,507, 701,508, [Group XXXIV], , 701,509 and 701,510 are referred to.
