Abstract

1,058,310. Grinding pigments. MOREHOUSE COWLES, Inc. Dec. 16, 1965 No. 53393/65. Heading B2A. {Also in Division F2]. A mill comprises a vertical cylindrical vessel 12 with upper and lower end closures, fluid inlet 27 and outlet 17 connections, and a rotatable shaft 13 with a driving end extending through and in fluid-sealed relation with one of the end closures having spaced impellers 14 secured to it. A removable screen 15 is mounted in the flow path between the impellers and the outlet connection, and a pump 29 is provided to create a pressure differential between the inlet and outlet connections to force the material to be processed to fill the vessel between its end closures and deliver at the outlet a desired controlled rate of flow of material, which has been processed out of contact with air. As described, the mill is formed by upper and lower assemblies 18. 19 each provided with a heating or cooling jacket. A sensing member 63 fixed to the upper cover plate cuts off the motor if the pressure rises beyond the normal pressure required. A removable plug 64 provides an opening for the grinding sand charge. A seal arrangement 52 (see Division F2) prevents leakage of the grinding media e.g. sand beads &c, from the vessel 12, and lubricant is maintained in a chamber 59 in the bore 51 around the shaft by a pump 62. A second embodiment provides feed to the top of the vessel and delivery from the bottom, Fig. 5, (not shown). Examples of paint and enamel mixes are described.
