Abstract
925,498. Sliding and folding roofs for motor vehicles. STUTTGARTER KAROSSERIEWERK REUTTER & CO. G.m.b.H. Oct. 2, 1961 [Oct. 8, 1960], No. 35513/61. Class 108(1). A convertible top for a cabriolet, has struts 11, 12, 13, 14 for tightening the covering material, the first strut 11 being slidable toward the strut 12 along the longitudinal axes of rods 4 forming the lateral frame members of top section 1. Struts 12, 14 are fixed to rods 4 and 6, and strut 13 is connected by links 15 to rods 4, 5, the rods 4, 5, 6 being pivoted together at 7 and 8. Each rod 4, Figs. 4, 7, is telescopic and comprises a U-section member 21 with flanges 24<SP>1</SP>, 25<SP>1</SP> fixed to strut 12, a member 22 slidable in member 21 and pivoted at 31 to a member 23 which has a flange 45 co-operating with flange 46 on member 21. In the expanded position, Fig. 4, a bell crank 37 pivoted at 36 to member 22 is biased by pin 42 on member 21 to force member 23 outwardly via pin 41 in slot 39, to force a sealing strip 35 against window 32. A plate 52 slidable on studs 54 on member 21, is moved by spring 55 to engage a retractable stud 51<SP>1</SP> on the vehicle to lock to to pin position. To open the front top section 1, a part 62 of strut 11 is unlocked from part 61, Fig 9, which is locked to windscreen frame 17 by hook 68; an electric motor 66 on strut 12 moves part 62 via gear rack 63 sliding in guides 29 on member 22, and gear units 64; on contact with strut 12 motor 66 is stopped and its electric circuit reversed so that motor 66 rotates in the opposite direction when next operated. For folding the top; a handle 73 is rotated clockwise, Fig. 9, to lock strut parts 61, 62 together and then release hook 68; motor 66 then moves strut 11 towards strut 12. The member 23, Fig. 4, pivots inwardly due to surfaces 45, 46 and bell crank 37 moves from pin 42 to finally abut a flange 52<SP>1</SP> on plate 52 to move and disengage the plate from stud 51<SP>1</SP>. The top can then be folded back into a rear compartment on the vehicle. The stud 51<SP>1</SP> is then retracted into the vehicle body.
