Abstract

High molecular weight linear copolycarbonates are made by reacting phosgene with a lower molecular weight copolycarbonate comprising alternating residues of a dihydric phenol and a dihydric alcohol and having reactive phenolic hydroxyl groups. The lower molecular weight polycarbonate is made by reacting a dihydric phenol with a bis-haloformate of a dihydric alcohol. Both reactions are effected in the presence of an inorganic or organic hydrogen halide acceptor and also, possibly, water and organic solvents for the polycarbonate produced by the reaction. Specified dihydric phenols are bis-phenols, and dihydroxy benzenes, naphthalenes and diphenyls. Specified dihydric alcohols are straight and branched chain alkanediols, oxy- and thioalkylene glycols, unsaturated aliphatic glycols, saturated cyclopentane and cyclohexane diols, xylylyene glycols, styryl glycol, 3:31-dihydroxydicyclopentyl ether, hydrogenated bisphenol-A and 1:2-dihydroxy-4-vinylcyclohexene. In the example, ethylene glycol bis-chloroformate was reacted with bisphenol-A and the product reacted with phosgene, both reactions being effected in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide and methylene chloride. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 808,485 and 808,487.
