Abstract

925,025. Induction heating of fluids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. March 1, 1961 [March 21, 1960], No. 9893/60. Class 39 (3). A process for the continuous transfer of thermal energy to a fluid, e.g. for carrying out chemical reactions at elevated temperatures, comprises passing the fluid to contact a rapidly spinning rotationsymmetrical heating element which is freely suspended by the fluid flow in a stream of the fluid, and maintaining said heating element at an elevated temperature. The heating may be by high frequency induction heating from a coil 5, and the spherical element 4, of tungsten carbide, graphite, tungsten, molybdenum or vanadium, suspended at the centre of the coil by fluid entering the reaction chamber 1 from an inlet pipe 2. Alternatively, a number of elements may be freely suspended at the mouths of a plurality of inlet tubes. Rapid cooling of the reaction products may be effected by a cooling jacket (not shown) or by direct contact with a coolant flowing through an inlet 10, the coolant and reaction products being subsequently separated in a chamber 13.
