1,247,099. Gas cooling method and apparatus. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. and SIEGENER A.G. GEISWEID EISENKONSTRUKTION BRUCKENBAU VERZINKEREI. 19 March, 1969 [2 April, 1968], No. 14506/69. Headings F4K and F4S. A gas, in particular cracking or synthesis gas, is cooled by bringing it into contact with a molten metal or alloy the temperature of which may be regulated by a cooling medium e.g. water or stream passed through or into the molten metal e.g. via heat exchange tubes 14. The molten medium may comprise bismuth, tin or thallium, or lead alloys containing any of these metals or silver. In an apparatus shown for carrying out the method, the molten medium M is contained in a vessel 1 partially lined with heat insulation 2. The gas enters the vessel via a pipe 19 and sieve 21 from which it flows upwardly through the molten medium to outlets 22 from the vessel. Unwanted accumulations Sch on the surface of the molten medium are removed to an outlet 24 by blast nozzles 23. The coolant for the molten medium circulates through a heat exchanger suspended from the roof 8 of the vessel, and comprises inlet tubes 10 communicating via headers 11 and downflow tubes 12 with headers 13 from which tubes 14 extend upwardly to further headers 15. These lead via tubes 16 and headers 17 to outlet pipes (18, Fig. 1) for the now heated coolant which in the case of water or steam may be conveyed therefrom to a boiler drum. Regulation of the rate of heat transfer may be effected by raising or lowering the inlet temperature of the cooling medium, or (using inlets and outlets 27, 28) of the level of the molten medium M. At the lower end of the casing 1 is a space 5 defined by a bridge member 2a of heat resistant material e.g. ceramic, and containing a tube 6 to which a heating medium is supplied to maintain molten the medium M.
