Abstract

924,735. Headboxes for paper-making machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 23, 1958], No. 30311/59. Class 96. A head box comprises three walls arranged to define a triangular cross-section, a stock inlet and a stock outlet at two corners of the triangle, and at the third a pivot device for relative movement of the two walls forming the corner, and an inlet for compressed air to maintain a predetermined level of stock in the head box. As shown, the slice outlet 18, which has local adjustment across the machine at 28 lies at the apex between the sloping wall 17 and the apron 14a. The upper end of wall 17 is supported by a pivot pin 19 at each side of the machine, fitted with screw adjustment 23, 24 and allowing the top wall 17 to be raised to the position shown in broken line by means of a vertically adjustable rod 27 and pivot 26, moved by worm gearing 25, e.g. for purposes of cleaning and maintenance. The joint is sealed by the strip 20. The pivot pin may be locked in position by an axial clamp 21a. Pulp is supplied through a duct 30, risers 33 and throats S-1, S-2 and S-3. The pulp level is stabilized by the overflow 39 and by the admission of compressed air at 36. The rear wall 15 may be adjusted a little, e.g. by the insertion of shims at 15c, or by a worm gear (not shown) to vary the size of the throats S-2 and S-3.
