Abstract

924,675. Feeding sheets. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. May 15, 1959 [May 21, 1958], No. 16790/59. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group XX] A copying machine in which an original, after being fed into the machine, is carried round an endless path for as many cycles as are required, and then withdrawn, the said original passing through a printing station during each cycle, has means for feeding a copy sheet during each cycle so as to be carried with the original as a composite through the printing station, the transporting means comprising two belts one of which is transparent. In the form shown, an endless carrier belt 10 passes round rollers 11-15. A second endless belt 16 passes round rollers 17-20. Thus between rollers 14 and 20 the two belts are in contact. Belt 10 is transparent and heat-resistant, and belt 16 may be of fabric or a transparent polyester; suitable belt materials are suggested. A tubular incandescent lamp 21 inside a reflector 22 throws a focal line of radiation on the surface of the print roller 12. The graphic originals 47 are stacked in a feed device 28, and one is fed forward by a feed roller 46 on to the horizontal upper section of belt 10. It passes between two curved shield members 23, 24, tripping a control switch 26 which initiates the sequence of operations, and comes to rest against a stop 33. A copy sheet from a second feed device 29 has also been fed forward to abut against stop 33, so that the two sheets are now superimposed. Rollers 34 now move upwards to lift the leading edges of the two sheets clear of stop 33 and against belt 10, which carries the sheets round to the printing station, between belt 10 and roller 12. Here lamp 21 is switched on to make the exposure. The sheets are now guided to pass between roller 13 and a deflector shield 27 towards a fan assembly 32, which draws the adjacent copy sheet away from the original and deposits it in a receiving tray 31. The original is meanwhile carried forward, and as it approaches roller 14 it is caught between both belts 10 and 16. It is so conveyed, past roller 15 and on to the upper straight part of belt 10 towards the shield members 23, 24 and so on towards a further complete circuit. Thus the original is returned round an endless path for as many circuits as is required, a copy being made each time. When it is desired to withdraw the original, no copy sheet is fed forward, so that the fan assembly then draws the original itself away on to tray 31. A new original may then be introduced from the device 28, if required. In order to maintain lateral alignment of original and copy sheet, a belt alignment control unit is provided, as described in Specification 924,677 [Group XXX]. The copy sheet feeding device is described more fully in Specification 924,676.
