Abstract

The invention comprises semicarbazides (I) of the general formula: <FORM:0924600/IV(a)/1> and hydrazines (II) of the general formula: <FORM:0924600/IV(a)/2> and their acid addition salts, wherein X represents a hydroxy group and Y, Z and Z1 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C1-4-alkoxy group and the preparation of the semicarbazides (I) by bringing into contact with an aqueous solution containing cyanate ions, an aqueous solution of an acid addition salt of a hydrazine (II) or with a solution of cyanic acid, the free hydrazine (II), and of the hydrazine (II) either by condensing an appropriately substituted benzaldehyde with a hydrazine carboxylic acid ester, reducing the hydrazone so formed and removing the carboxylic acid ester residue by alkaline hydrolysis or (in the preparation of certain halogen substituted-hydroxybenzylhydrazines) by halogenating an acylated cresol so as to introduce a halogen atom into the methyl group, reacting the halogenated compound with hydrazine and deacylating the resulting product.
