Abstract

924,583. Automatic tobacco control. INDUSTRIAL NUCLEONICS CORPORATION. June 1, 1961 [June 7, 1960], No. 19876/61. Class 38 (4). In a cigarette-making machine the excess in a stream of tobacco 12 is removed by a revolving knife 16 which is positioned by a servo-system in accordance with the weight of the finished cigarette rod 26, and the output of the stream feed mechanism 10 is controlled by a second servo-system in accordance with the position of the knife 16. Thus, while the knife corrects short term irregularities in the tobacco flow, prolonged deviation of the knife from a mean position results in a correction of the mean quantity of tobacco in the stream. The knife 16 is positioned by a cam 36 controlled by a system described in Specifications 887,267 and 887,271, and the cigarette rod is monitored by a radiation source and detector. The cam 36 is coupled to the slider of a potentiometer 50, the output from which controls, through a servosystem 56 . . . 60, a variable feed mechanism 10. The potentiometer 50 may form a bridge circuit with a second, hand set, potentiometer 70 (Fig. 2, not shown), the output of the bridge forming the control signal. The hand set potentiometer is used to compensate for individual machine and tobacco characteristics. Specifications 853,139, 887,268 and U.S.A. Specification 2,895,888 also are referred to.
