Abstract

924,555. Carton closing machines. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. March 29, 1960 [May 11, 1959], No. 16136/59. Class 94(1). Filled cartons 1 with the hinged lids 7 folded down and the heat sealable flaps 8, 9, 10 on the lid projecting horizontally, as shown in Fig 2, are fed to a conveyer 12 shown in plan in Figs. 7A and 7B and the lids are pressed downwardly by an endless belt 19 faced with sponge rubber. While in the belt 12 the side flaps 8, 9 are folded down against the side walls 5 and are heat sealed thereto. A continuously rotatable transfer device 14 then transfers the carton to the second conveyer belt 13, turning the carton through 270 degrees until it abuts a stop 47 and is gripped between the second conveyer belt 13 and a superposed presser belt 48. While on the belt 13 the front flap 10 is folded down and heat sealed to the front wall 3. Cooling means may be associated with each belt. The cartons are pushed from guides 11 on to the belt 12 by the introduction of successive cartons and are moved past stationary folders 20, 21 which fold down the side flaps, and then past electric heaters comprising nylon belts 34, 35 heated by electric heaters 22, and past cooling boxes 23 fed with cooling water through pipes 41, 42 and a pump 43. The turning of the carton through 270 degrees by the transfer disc 14 orientates the carton on the second belt 13 so that a folder 53 folds down the front flap 10 and the carton passes heating devices 54 and cooling means 156 similar to those associated with the belt 12.
