Abstract

924,485. Variable-speed gear. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Jan. 15, 1962. [Jan. 12, 1961], No. 1307/61. Class 80 (2). A continuously variable ratio friction planetary gear for portable electric drills &c. comprises an input shaft 2 and shouldered drive member 7 engaged by planetating balls 8 rolling on a surrounding non-rotary housing 1, each ball being caged in its own arm 9 pivoted upon an axially movable connector 10 in quick-pitch screw-threaded engagement with a sleeve 11 and its attached output shaft 3, a spring 12 urging the connector 10 upwardly of the Figure to force the balls radially outwards of the shouldered drive member 7, increasing load upon the driven shaft 3 causing the connector 10 to be screwed into the sleeve 11 against the bias of the spring 12 so that the arms 9 draw the balls 8 radially inwards and the gear gives a lower ratio. The shouldered drive member 7 is biased axially into engagement with the planetating balls 8 by a spring 13.
