Abstract

Cis-1,4-polybutadiene of controlled molecular weight is obtained by polymerizing butadiene with a catalyst comprising a dialkyl aluminium monohalide, and a compound of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table according to Mendel<\>aeeff, in the presence of a solvent mixture comprising at least one aromatic and at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon, and controlling the average molecular weight of the polymer by increasing the volume ratio between the aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons in the mixture. The aliphatic hydrocarbon may be butane, pentane, petroleum ether, heptane, or iso-octane. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be benzene, or toluene. The catalysts exemplified are diethyl aluminium chloride admixed with nickel or cobalt diacetylacetonate.
