Abstract
924,026. Metallurgical converters. PINTSCH BAMAG A.G. Dec. 21, 1961 [Jan. 5, 1961], No. 45864/61. Class 72. A metallurgical converter is provided with a circumferential bearing ring having two coaxial, diametrically opposed hubs and two trunnions are shrink fitted, one in each hub. As shown, a bearing ring 1 of box construction welded to a converter shell has a hub 9 welded thereto at 10 and 12. The hubs are bored by a single boring bar so that the bores 14 are axially aligned and trunnions 4 having parts 15 of slightly larger diameter than the bores 14 are shrunk by immersing in liquid nitrogen so that the parts 15 become less in diameter than the bores 14. The parts 15 are then inserted into the bores 14 and allowed to warm up to room temperature to produce a shrink fit. Plates 13 may then be welded in place to form the inside of the converter shell. The trunnions may also be welded to the hubs at 17 and 18. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the converter vessel is supported in a bearing ring by claws and the trunnions shrink fitted in hubs formed in the bearing ring.
