Abstract

In a loading machine in which a conveyance passage with an endless scraper chain is provided on top of the vehicle frame and in which the frame comprises a rearwardly extending slewable jib pivoted to the main body, an hydraulically actuated conveyer chain tensioning assembly is provided which is operated by the jib whenever the jib is slewed to one or other side of a central neutral position to maintain a substantially constant tension in the chain. As shown, Fig. 2, the main body of the vehicle frame comprises a section 8 which is luffable about an axis 10 on a body section 9 by hydraulic rams 35, and on which a jib section 7 is slewably mounted about an axis 11. A conveyer chain idler pulley 15 is mounted on a frame 16 which is movable lengthwise of the jib section under of a single-acting hydraulic ram 20 fixed to the jib section 7. The jib section is slewed by a pair of hydraulic rams 22, 23 pivoted to the jib section at 27 and to the section 8, and a control unit 50 is pivoted at 57 to the section 8 and at 58 to the jib section. The control unit comprises cylinders 51, 52, Fig. 3, secured together, and pistons 53, 54, and is connected to the hydraulic circuit of the ram 20 in such a way that as the jib section is slewed from the central position, the control unit is extended or retracted, thereby causing the piston 54 or 53, respectively, to displace fluid to the ram 20 to maintain the chain tension at the appropriate value. The rams 22, 23 and 35 are connected to the main hydraulic system, Fig. 3, which includes a continuously running pump 32 and a manually operable valve assembly 31, and the ram 20 and control unit 50 are connected to an auxiliary hydraulic system which is connected to the main system through a non-return valve 44, spring-loaded units 64 being provided in the auxiliary system to compensate for shock loads applied to the ram 20 through the pulley 15.
