Abstract

923,755. Fluid-pressure braking apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. June 27, 1960, No. 22415/60. Addition to 863,827. Class 103 (1). A control valve device for variable load fluid-pressure braking apparatus, comprises a driving member 13, 17 engaging a driven member 25 through a clutch 31 over all but an initial and substantially constant portion of its fixed travel, the member 25 having a starting position determined by the vehicle load and an ultimate position determining the degree of braking. The member 25 is connected via pin- and-slot connection 28, crank 29, rod 34 to a crank 35 pivoted to a spring part of the vehicle and having an arm 37 engaging an unsprung part 38. With chamber 15 vented and the vehicle empty the device is as shown. When the vehicle is loaded the position of member 25 is adjusted by bell-crank 35. Fluid-pressure is admitted to chamber by an electromagnetic valve when the vehicle doors close; the member 13, 17 rises and eventually picks up member 25 through clutch 31. If the vehicle is loaded, the member 25 engages plate 26 to compress spring 11 which controls the degree of braking ; with no load the spring is not compressed. The connection between the electromagnetic valve and chamber 15 may contain two valves in parallel, one preventing flow to chamber 15 and the other being closed whenever brake cylinder pressure exceeds a predetermined low value. This prevents the raising of member 13, 17 until the brakes are released. The member 13, 17 may be lowered by fluid-pressure against a spring, the fluid being released to raise member 25. The apparatus may be compressed fluid or vacuum-operated.
