923,629. Ink-ribbon mechanisms. E. V. BYERS. Sept. 27, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 39630/60. Class 100 (4). The ink-ribbon feed mechanism in Fig. 2 comprises an arcuately shaped triangular cam 3, which may be secured to an axle 1, driven from a carriage escapement wheel 2 (Fig. 1, not shown), or driven by the axle through a freewheel clutch 4 (Fig. 1, not shown), the cam reciprocating two links 7 and 8 by engaging two abutments 15, 16 and 17, 18 on the links 7 and 8 respectively, the reciprocating motion being transferred to ratchet-wheels 21, by pawls 24 on detents 22, provided on the links 7 and 8, and which are movable into and out of operative positions by cams 25 and adapted when in their operative positions to rotate step-by-step the ratchet-wheels 21, secured on axles 9 and 10 of ribbon spools 11 and 12 (not shown), respectively. The ribbon feed reversing cams 25 provided in association with the detents 22 are interconnected by a reversing link 27, so that both cams and one arm 26 are connected to a manually-operated lever 28, the cams being so arranged that when one detent is in operation, the other detent is held by its cam in an inoperative position and vice versa, the change in direction of the ribbon feed being initiated by a visual indicator, such as a clip or staple, provided on the ribbon.
