Abstract

In apparatus for converting latent heat of vaporization to sensible heat, a gas or vapour containing water vapour or other condensable vapour is sprayed with water or other liquid at 7 as it enters a Venturi-tube to provide liquid <PICT:0923491/III/1> nuclei in the gas or vapour and water or other liquid condensed on the liquid nuclei is removed in the throat of the Venturi-tube by centrifugal means thereby to heat the gas or vapour issuing from the divergent portion of the Venturi-tube. As shown in the drawing the centrifugal separation means comprises a throat 3 of curved spiral shape and separated liquid impinges against a baffle 9 and is withdrawn through a pipe 4 and may be recirculated by a pump 8 to the spray 7. In a modification the gas or vapour entering the Venturi-throat is given a rotational movement by passage through guide vanes. The apparatus may be used to effect a fractional condensation of condensable constituents from natural gas or the like and the liquid sprayed into the gas to form liquid nuclei may be one with a low vapour pressure.
