Abstract

Apparatus for coating a moving web of paper carried by a back-up roll, comprises a train of distributing rolls including a pair of gate rolls for metering coating composition disposed between them, an applicator roll for transferring a film of coating composition to the web, a single frame pivoted at one end and comprising an opposed parallel pair of side beams supporting the applicator roll adjacent one end and means pivotally supporting the distributing rolls thereon and means for independently rocking each of the pivoted distributing rolls whereby to apply pressure at the nip formed between each adjacent roll in the distributing chain. Fig. 1 shows means for coating a paper web 10 first on one side by roll train 11 and then on the other side by roll train 13 with appropriate drying drums 15 and 17. Fig. 2 shows the roll train 13 in detail the train 11 being similar. Each train comprises metering rolls 19, 20 to the nip of which coating composition is delivered through conduit 25, line 26 and valve 27; distributing rolls 21, 22 and applicator roll 23 which is pressed against back-up roll 14. Should it be desired to employ a lesser number of rolls the coating composition can be supplied to the nip of rolls 21, 22 through line 29 and valve 28, valve 27 being closed. Rolls 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 are all carried on a unitary frame comprising spaced beams 30, 30 pivoted at 34 to standard 35 secured to base 36. Applicator roll 23 is fixedly <PICT:0923447/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0923447/IV(a)/2> mounted to beams 30 but rolls 19 to 22 are slidably and pivotally mounted thereon so that they can be adjusted in position to take up wear &c. and pressure loaded to apply the desired nip pressure between them. Each of rolls 19 to 22 are carried on arms 44 pivoted at 45 to adjustable sliding blocks 46. The blocks can be relatively adjusted by screw means 52 and secured in position on beams 30. The lower ends of arms 44 are acted upon by pneumatic springs or air diaphragms 54. The beams 30 are joined by cross-ties 31, 32, 33 and these cross-ties are acted upon by air springs or diaphragms 72 to support the beams 30, 30 and to exert the desired nip pressure between applicator roll 23 and back-up roll 14. A flexible doctor blade 9 is provided after the applicator roll to smooth the surface of the coating.
