Class 73 [Also in Group XVII] A device for applying a reinforcing band to a web of wrapping material comprises a yoke 19 which is pivotally mounted for rotation about a vertical axis and supports a shaft 21 carrying a guide roller 36 and spaced arms 22 interconnected at their outer ends by a guide bar or roller 24. A pressure roller 27 is rotatable in bearings 25 resiliently mounted on the arms 22, and an electrically-heated roller 31 is carried by arms 30 pivoted on the bar 24. The arms 30 carry stops 32 engageable with the ends or upper surfaces of the arms 22 to support the roller 31 in the alternative positions shown in Figs. 1 and 6. If the roller 31 is positioned as shown in Fig. 1, a roll 12 of wrapping material is mounted on a rotatable support 11 so that a web W may be drawn from its underside and fed to a wrapping machine. Banding material B coated on both sides with a heat-sensitive adhesive is drawn from a roll 15. mounted on a similar support 14, and threaded over the roller 36, under the roller 24, over and around the heated roller 31 and between the pressure roller 27 and the roll 12 so that the wrapping machine is supplied with the web W having the thin forcing band adhered to its underside. If the roller 31 is positioned as shown in Fig. 6, the roll 12 is reversed so that the web is drawn from its upper side, the banding material being threaded over the rollers 36 and 31 and applied to the upper side of the web by the roller 27. The weight of the arms 22 and associated parts is partially supported by a spring 38 connected between one of a series of pins 40 on the yoke 19 and one of a series of pins 39 on an arm 37 secured to the shaft 21, the pressure applied by the roller 27 being variable by changing the position of the spring. The shaft 21 may be rotated by a hand crank 41 to raise the arms 22 to an inoperative position in which they may be retained by a ratchet 43 on the shaft co-operating with a pawl 44 pivoted to the yoke 19. The vertical pivot 20 of the yoke enables the device to be swung to one side for cleaning purposes.
