Abstract

923,023. Valves. FLIGHT REFUELLING Ltd., and P. S. MACGREGOR. July 28, 1959 [Aug. 7, 1958], No. 25395/58. Class 135. A valve plunger 12, Fig. 1, is urged on to a seat 7 by a spring 13 and fluid pressure from the inlet 10 which leaks past the plunger 12 to a chamber 14; a disc closure 19 is also urged by a spring 30 to close a port 16 through a transverse wall 15 in the plunger. Upon energizing a solenoid coil 5 the armature 6 thereof moves rightwardly whereupon the frustoconical part 26 of an associated thrust rod 18 forces balls 27 outwardly into wedging engagement with a frusto-conical surface 24 on a head 23 so unseating the closure 19 and relieving the pressure in chamber 14. The closure 19 is further opened when the rod 18 abuts the end of a bore 25 in the stem 20 of the closure 19. Upon the head 23 engaging a spider 22 in the plunger 12 the latter is readily unseated since opening of the closure 19 equalizes the pressures across the plunger. When the coil 5 is de-energized springs 13, 30, 28 restore the parts to the positions shown. The plunger 12 may also be manuallyoperated through a cam 31, sleeve 38, spring 39, cap 41 and a plunger 43 abutting the armature 6; the cam 31 provides for a longer stroke than is required to open the valve, the excess movement being absorbed by the spring 39 which allows the lost-motion of the sleeve 38 relative to the plunger 43. The plunger 12 may control a main shut-off valve by controlling the connection between a control chamber in the latter and the downstream side of the main valve, the control chamber being connected through a restricted passage to the upstream side of the valve.
