922,709. Determining physical qualities of materials. ELECTRONIC SWITCHGEAR (LONDON) Ltd. May 8, 1959 [Feb. 10, 1958], No. 4288/58. Class 37. A liquid conductivity measuring cell comprises carbon-coated metal electrodes. Fig. 1 shows a measuring head provided with a screw thread 13 for attachment to the piping or a container of a boiler feed water system. The outer electrode 10 is a tube of stainless steel, bronze, brass or metal known under the Registered Trade Mark " Monel," the exposed parts of which are painted with a mixture of colloidal graphite and synthetic resin adhesive. The inner electrode 11, having a terminal 21, is supported by a sintered alumina sleeve 15. The exposed part of the electrode 11 is also carbon coated. Ports 32 are provided to allow the test liquid to flow continuously inside the outer electrode 10. A pressure-resistant seal is provided by means of a gland 25, a P.T.F.E. washer 26 and a copper-asbestos washer 27. For high-temperature applications the washer 26 may take the form of a hollow metal ring filled with nitrogen. In a modification, Fig. 2, a masking sleeve 34 of temperature-resistant glass or silica is supported by a metal bush 35. The sleeve 34 may be removed to change the cell constant by a factor of 10. A fine adjustment is provided by means of an auxiliary electrode 37 mounted on a screw 38.
