Abstract

A process for producing sulphones and sulphoxides comprises reacting one mole of a compound containing at least one divalent sulphur atom bonded to two carbon atoms with from 1-2 moles hydrogen peroxide for each such sulphur atom in said compound, in the presence of a catalytic amount of a member of the group consisting of tungstic and vanadic acids and their alkali and alkaline earth metal, ammonium and amine salts. The starting materials are defined generally as compounds of the type R1SR2 where R1 and R2 are aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic groups or R1SR2 represents a heterocycle containing sulphur. These sulphides may contain hydroxy, alkoxy, nitro, halo, alkyl, aryl, carboxyl, amido, acyloxy, sulphonic, sulphoxy, sulphone, sulphonamide, nitrile and acyl groups as further substituents. Sulphoxides may also be used as starting materials to give the corresponding sulphones. The oxidation is preferably carried out at 50-80 DEG C. using 31% aqueous hydrogen peroxide and a sequestering agent such as ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid may be added. Examples describe the preparation of 5-nitro-2-methyl-m-xylylene-a 1, a 3-bis(sulphonylethanol), 2-(5-nitro-o-xylyl-a -sulphonyl) ethanol, 2-(4- and 6-methoxy-3-nitrophenylsulphonyl) ethanol, diethanolsulphone, 2,21,4,41- tetrahydroxydiphenyl sulphoxide, diphenylsulphone, 2-phenylsulphonylethanol, and 3,31- sulphonyldipropionic acid.
