Abstract
922,640. Baling machines. P. J. AVERY. Sept. 12, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 32709/61. Class 94(1). [Also in Group I]. A hay baling machine comprises a pair of endless chains 27 carrying transverse bars 28 from which project hay-engaging members 29, a part of the endless chains passing near the ground so that the members 29 roll the hay into a mass of circular cross-section on the ground as the machine is towed up a windrow. Tubular shafts 14, 15 rotatably mounted on the machine frame 12, carry rigidly arms 19, 20 respectively on which shafts carrying two pairs of sprockets for the chains 27 are mounted. The shaft 14 also has a member 37 attached to the machine frame by a spring 38, and an arm 39 joined by a chain 40 to a pivoted locking arm 41. One of the arms 20 has a catch 42 engaged by the arm 41 to hold down the free ends of the arms. The other arm 20 is attached to a spring-loaded clutch 35 by linkage 43, 44. The lower runs of the chains 27 are driven in the direction of travel of the machine and, as hay accumulates, the chains assume the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, At a given point the catch 42 is released and the arms 20 are allowed to rise, thereby releasing the hay. At the same time the drive to the chains is broken through the clutch 35 so that the hay-engaging members may reverse their direction of travel. In a modification, manually operated or hydraulically operated means raise the arms 20. Again, the machine may be mounted on the front of a tractor on a vertically movable frame; guide rollers are rotatably mounted on the frame transversely to the tractor's direction of travel, endless raking members being mounted on the rollers.
