Abstract

921,641. Laminating. E. S. & A. ROBINSON Ltd. Dec. 12. 1960 [Dec. 11, 1959], No. 42258/59. Class 140. Cardboard is laminated to paper or other flexible material in web form by feeding two or more webs of board in untensioned condition side by side and spaced apart, and tensioning them before they proceed to the laminating unit. Preferably the board webs are formed by slitting a single web and the paper &c. web is correspondingly slit, but into wider webs the edges of which are turned over and secured to the reverse sides of the board webs. The products may be used for making boxes and lids. As shown a web of cardboard 1 is drawn from a reel 2, under tension, by rolls 3, is thereafter freed from tension and accurately presented by side guides 4 to rotating or non-rotating rolls 5, and is slit while tensioned into two webs at 6. The webs are detensioned in passing between rolls 7 and allowed to run free and to separate while travelling to guiding means comprising a plate 9, side guides 8 and a riding roll 10. The laterally separated webs then pass around a rubber covered or other tensioning roller 11 and upwards to rollers 12 where they are laminated to paper webs 13 drawn as a single web, wider than the web 1, from a reel 14, slit at 15 and coated with adhesive at 16. The combined webs pass to a unit 17 which turns over the edges of the paper webs on to the reverse side of the board.
