Abstract
858,746. Multi-layer paper &c. CLEMENS, L. Sept. 4, 1959, No. 30317/59. Class 96. Corrugated paper &c. from a roll 1 is cut by circular knives 5 into longitudinal strips 46, which, after passing between horizontal rollers 43, 44 are twisted through 90 degrees and assembled together by vertical rolls 45, 48 &c., and directed to an endless belt made of vertical slats 55, e.g. glued to endless bands of linen or rubber &c., and travelling around a row of cylinders 31 which are grooved to receive the bands. The lower edges of the paper &c. thus being wound are supported at each side of the row of cylinders 31 by travelling belts 33, pressure being exerted on the paper &c. by rollers 72 on lever-arms 73 counter-weighted at 77. After layers have been added to build up the desired thickness, the drive is stopped, the wound-up layers cut and further processed. A motor, a gear-box 17, and a continuously-variable gear-box 11 &c. provide for driving various components of the machine, the drive for the supporting belts 33 being faster than the main drive, to ensure that the material is wound, under tension, tightly upon itself.
