Abstract

<PICT:0921607/III/1> In an apparatus for dehydrating sodium hydroxide, a furnace installation 11 incorporates first and second tube systems 17, 16 through which the NaOH flows successively, and separators 18, 19 between tube systems 17, 16 and after tube system 16, respectively, for removal of water vapour. 50-75% aqueous NaOH may be treated and 99,5% NaOH is collected in receiver 22. Gas or liquid fuel is burnt in combustion chamber 12 and hot gases flow through flues 13, 14 to stack 15. The water vapour from separators 18, 19 is condensed in 24. Tube systems 16, 17 are made up of a plurality of series-connected units one above the other, each unit consisting of a plurality of spaced-apart cast iron pipes supported by, and projecting through, the side walls of the flues. The individual pipes are interconnected externally of the flues by removable U-bends covered by heat insulated detachable plates.
