Abstract

921,447. Liquid level indicators. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Oct. 6, 1960 [Nov. 2, 1959], No. 37178/59. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] In a device for indicating the levels 13 of a moderator liquid in tubes 12 in a nuclear reactor tank 10 housing fuel elements 11 the lower end of each tube 12 communicates through a conduit 15 with one chamber 16a of a remotely arranged pressure-responsive device 16 the other chamber 16b of which, separated from the chamber 16a by a diaphragm 17, communicates through a conduit 19 with a mercury containing column 18. The upper end of each tube 12, filled with a gas e.g. helium at a selected pressure, is connected by a conduit 24 to a pressure transmitter 25 communicating by means of a conduit 26 with the upper end of the column 18 which is filled with a gas such as carbon dioxide. The mercury level in each column 18 can be sensed e.g. by an inductance or capacitance type of pick-up 20 connected in a bridge circuit 21 feeding a meter 22. The lengths L, I of the conduits 15, 19 are given a ratio equal to the reciprocal of the densities of the liquids in them in order to compensate for accelerations when the reactor is mounted e.g. in a marine vessel.
