The cutter head 7, 18 of a tunnelling machine is connected mechanically to a motor 1 which may drive a pump 11 connected to an hydraulic cylinder 14 having a piston 15 connected to a crank-shaft 13 having a pinion 12 meshed with the parts of the head, the arrangement being that the cutter head may be driven by mechanical transmission alone, or by mechanical transmission assisted by hydraulic transmission powered by the pump, or by either of the aforesaid transmissions with the hydraulic transmission augmented by a pump 19 driven by a motor 25, or by an hydraulic transmission from the pump 19 alone. A sun-wheel 4 driven by the motor 1 is meshed with planet wheels 5 on the part 7 of the head which is meshed with the pinion 12. The planet-wheels 5 are meshed with a differential wheel 8 meshed with a driving pinion 9 for the pump 11. When a valve 22 is closed, the pump 11 is unable to operate and the wheel 8 is held stationary, whereby the parts 7, 18 are operated purely mechanically. When the valve 22 is opened, the pump 11 operates to drive the piston 15 and crank 16, to produce a combined mechanical and hydraulic drive. If the pump 19 is started, the hydraulic component of the drive is augmented and if the motor 1 is stopped the drive is solely hydraulic. Specification 698,978 is referred to.
