Abstract
921,213. Loud-speaker enclosures. J. S. MURRAY. April 3, 1959 [April 3, 1958; Aug. 5, 1958], Nos. 10767/58 and 25113/58. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A folded pipe having at one end an aperture in which to mount a sound-radiating diaphragm has its ends connected by an acoustic resistance having an impedance between one and sixteen times the characteristic impedance or average characteristic impedance of the pipe. A box 14, Fig. 4, has an aperture for insertion of a loudspeaker 12, and a partition 15 divides the box to provide a closed folded pipe construction. An aperture in the partition is fitted with an acoustic resistance 16 comprising screens, slots, holes or felt. Isothermalizing packing 17 is provided at one or both ends of the pipe. The pipe may be folded twice, Fig. 5. In another arrangement, in addition to an acoustic resistance 25, Fig. 6, connecting the ends of the pipe, there is an acoustic resistance 26 leading to free air mid-way along the acoustic length of the pipe, and one or more acoustic resistances 27, leading to free air, at the end of the pipe remote from the loud-speaker 24. Acoustic resistance 28 leads to a restricted space. The ratios of resistances 25, 26, 27, 28 are 4 : 1 : 2 : 4, resistance 26 being approximately equal to the characteristic impedance of the pipe. Packing 32 having its grain parallel with the length of the pipe improves the constancy of the cross-section of the pipe and damps high frequencies.
