Abstract

920,816. Converting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 10, 1961 [July 20, 1960], No. 25286/60. Class 38 (2). Semi-conductor controlled rectifier 1 is connected in series with load 2 and secondary winding 3 of transformer 4, whose primary 6 is connected to A.C. supply 5, and which has winding 10 supplying a pulse generator, which maintains the firing pulse until the end of the conducting half-cycle. Winding 10 and capacitor 11 apply a sinusoidal signal to base of transistor 7 advanced 90 degrees on the voltage applied to rectifier 1 and load 2 by winding 3. Control potentiometer 16 and resistances 17, 18 apply variable bias voltage to base of transistor 7. Transistor 7 conducts when its base swings positive with respect to its emitter, connecting its collector and the junction of resistances 12, 13, to earth. The base of transistor 8 is then driven positive by resistance 14 and battery 15. Consequently transistor 8 (formerly held cut-off by battery 9 and resistances 12, 13) conducts, applying gate current to rectifier 1, which fires. Without rectifier 20 and resistance 21, transistor 8 would remain conducting until base of transistor 7 swings negative again. Rectifier 20 and resistance 21 drive base of transistor 8 negative, cutting off gate current, at the end of the halfcycle, when rectifier 1 becomes reverse biased.
