920,688. Ventilation of prefabricated enclosures; workshops; walls and floors; building panels. K. E. GIDLEY. Jan. 23, 1961 [Oct. 23, 1959], No. 36036/59. Classes 20 (1), 20 (4), 87 (1) and 137. A prefabricated air-conditioned structure is constructed from panels 13 which have integrally formed ducts 26 at their upper ends so that when secured together the panels define with a floor 24 and ceiling 12, an air-tight enclosure in which the duct 26 extends completely around the side and end walls 10 and 11, the duct being connected to an air conditioning unit 32 and having openings 29 to the interior of the enclosure. Partitions 30 divide the duct into two sections 33 and 34, the former being connected to the outlet and the latter to the inlet of the plant 32 which is operated at pressures greater than atmospheric. As shown in Fig. 6, each opening 29 formed in the oblique member 28 of the duct is provided with air deflector blades and an air filter 46 carried by a framework 47 which slides in guides 43 and may be removed by means of a handle 50. The duct may have an extension 27 forming part of the ceiling, as shown, or may be formed separately from the ceiling which is bonded to it. The panels have a laminated structure (Fig. 4) in which a central portion 14 of plastics bonded fibres, e.g. plastics bonded flax, is faced with hardboard 15 to which is applied a phenolformaldehyde laminate sheet 16 surfaced with a chemical resin known as " Melamine." The sheet 16 is removed at the joint between two panels and the resulting channels are filled with plastic strips 17, further jointing being effected by means of tongues 18. The ceiling 12 is constructed of panels similar to those forming the walls and the floor 24 has a coating of polyvinyl chloride. Transverse and longitudinal girders 40, 41 support the ceiling 12 and the enclosure is provided with a door 52 leading to a compartment 37 enclosed by walls 38 one of which has an air-tight door 39 leading to a working area 42. Doors 36 and 39 may be so interconnected that only one may be opened at a time. Windows 19 with frames 23 are inserted into each panel and may be made of flexible material, e.g. that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Perspex," so as to form soundtransmitting diaphragms. The enclosure may be illuminated by lamps within casings attached to the panels in an air-tight manner and accessible only from the outside.
