920,587. Straightening bars. EXECUTORS OF JAMES MILLS Ltd. Dec. 29, 1961 [Oct. 1, 1960], No. 33754/60. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for feeding metal bars to a reeling machine, of the kind comprising a number of power driven rolls between which the bar is advanced and simultaneously rotated about its own axis so as to effect straightening of the bar as it advances through the machine, is characterized in that the bar feeding apparatus is provided with means for imparting rotation to each bar before the forward end thereof is gripped by the rolls of the reeling machine, so as thereby to decrease the impact resulting from the initial engagement of the forward end of the bar with the reeling machine rolls, said bar rotating means comprising a rotatably driven tube through the bore of which the bar is advanced, which tube is adapted also to provide protection to the operator consequent upon any whipping of the rear end of the non-straight bar, as the bar is advanced through the reeling machine. A bar 33 is fed by a unit 31 including a pair(s) of rolls through non-rotary tubes 18 through tubes 16a, 16b, 16c, connected together by flexible couplings 26 and rotated by an electric motor driving a pulley detachably mounted on the front end of the tube 16a, to a reeling machine 11 which straightens the bar. Each coupling 26 includes a flange 25 welded on the forward end of the tube and a flange removably attached to the rear end of the tube, the tubes being interchangeable.
