[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Welding.-An apparatus for the circumferential welding of parts which in the neighbourhood of the weld are figures of revolution, such as in welding the end ring into the nose of an armament shell, comprises a welding head having an automatically fed arc welding electrode beneath which is located a work table having a face plate which carries at least two rotary work chucks and which is pivotally mounted so that the chucks may be successively registered in position under the electrode the face plate being locked in position and the chucks, when in working position, being connected to and driven by a motor mounted on the work table. A new work piece may thus be inserted during welding of a previously inserted piece. The electrode 2 is carried by a head, which is vertically adjustable by a screw through a hand wheel 8 in a slide laterally adjusted by a rack and pinion through a hand wheel 6. The work table 9, which is pivoted at 12 so that the welding point may be brought into vertical alignment with the electrode and then locked in position by a bolt 14 passing through a slot 15, carries a face plate 20 which is pivoted thereto at 21. The face plate carries two or more chucks 22 which co-operate with a spring pressed centre 29 mounted in ball or roller bearings in brackets 28 pivoted at 27 to pillars 26 carried by the face plate. The brackets are movable about their pivots by a handle 30 and toggle mechanism when the work 24 is to be inserted between the chucks 22 and the centres 29. The handle is pivoted at 26e to an extension from the pillar 26 and is connected at 30d to a link 30c the other end of which is connected at 28a to the bracket 28. The brackets may alternately be operated by bolts and nuts. The chucks carry gears 25 which when in working position mesh with a pinion 18 on a shaft driven through worm reduction gear from an electric motor 16 mounted on the table. The face plate is locked in adjusted position by a hand released spring-pressed latch engaging, one of a number of notches in the face plate.
