In a method of rolling toothed profiles on rotating blank 6, Fig. 1, by means of a rotating tool 1, the blank 6 is fed axially during rolling and the tool I has arcuate teeth formed on a part-spherical periphery and is supported on a pivoted mounting 3 which turns about the centre point of the tool as the blank is fed so that the teeth are progressively rolled in the longitudinal direction of the blank axis. The blank 6 is supported between clamping plates 9, 10 on a slide 23 which is fed longitudinally by a feed-screw 19, Fig. 2, driven by a hand wheel 24 (not shown). The plate 9 is freely rotatable in a support 11 locked against rotation in a bush 22 integral with the slide 23 by a key 34 and movable longitudinally to clamp the work by a hand wheel 37 and screw spindle 38. The clamping plate 10 is rotatably mounted on a second bush 12 integral with the slide 23 and is driven through a splined shaft 13 from a motor 20 through pinions 41, 14. The tool 1 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 2 in the housing 3 and driven from the motor 20 through gears 15, 16 and a cardan shaft 4. The housing 3 is mounted on pivots 5 in a support 21 on the machine base and is turned about the pivots 5 during feeding of the blank by a sector 17 on the lower pivot 5 which engages a rack 18 on the slide 23. The support 21 is adjustable on the base by a bolt and slot arrangement which permits the use of different diameters for the work or tool, the pitch circle diameters of the pinions 15, 16 and sector 17 being in each case correspondingly changed.
