ApSCRlVENER I GRINDING OR ABRADING MACHINE Filed June 9, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet (2 ARTHUR SCRlVENER ORNEYS Patented Mar. 24, 1942 STATES PATENT ori ice Application June 9, 1941, Serial No. 397,201 In Great Britain April 8, 1940 2 Claims. .(Cl. 51-92) This invention has reference to improvements in grinding or abrading machines, and is more particularly applicable to machines which may be termed slideway grinders i. e. machines incorporating a rotary grinding surface which is brought into contact with the work to be ground to which is imparted a longitudinal motion by means of a traversable slide or slideway.
The object of the invention is to produce a machine of this kind in which the work can be finished by the grinding operation without involving any subsequent operation, so that an accurately finished product is produced directly from the grinding machine.
The invention consists of a grinding or abrading machine of the kind hereinbefore referred to, characterised by the rotary grinding memberv being so mounted that this member is capable of an initial setting in a linear direction in a plane which embraces or is parallel to the axis of the rotating member and in an arcuate or transverse direction thereto, the mounting being such as to admit of the grinding surface of the rotary member being traversed to and from the work in a plane parallel to the surface of the work being ground so as to generate a finished surface parallel to the grinding surface of the rotary member.
One means of carrying the invention into practice will now be described with particular reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is an elevation of a grinding or abrading machine incorporating the particular features of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a part sectional plan taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, when the longitudinal centre line through the adjustable slide is set in the vertical position.
Fig. 3 is a part sectional elevation on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The workpiece l is mounted on a horizontally traversable table 2 to which the workpiece is anchored or clamped. This table 2 is adapted to be'traversed in a horizontal plane in a longitudinal direction along the traversable slideway 3, the slideway being adapted for transverse or lateral traverse on the bed 4 of the machine in the manner of a planing machine. As viewed in Fig. 1, of the drawings the workpiece will have a motion to and from the observer in a horizontal plane. The rotary grinding member 5 in the form of a truncated conical wheel has an abrasive surface, the angle of the peripheral surface of the said grinding wheel preferably but not necessarily being that of the angle of the surface of the work to be ground, as for example in the production of an undercut or dovetailed groove as illustrated in Fig. 1 where it will be seen that the grinding face 5a is in aligned contact with the undercut face of the workpiece to be ground.
This rotary grinding wheel 5 is mounted on a spindle 6 which in turn is mounted on a pivotal segment 7 through a bracket 3, the segment being capable of arcuate adjustment about its axis on a spindle 9, and the segment being capable of being set about this axis and held in its set position by means of a pair of clamping blocks I 0 which are bolted to the face of the adjustable slide II which is mounted on and is capable of longitudinal adjustment in relation to a slideway l2 disposed behind and in engagement with the slide, the connection between the slide and slideway obtaining by means of a dovetailed joint as is clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The adjustable slide H has mounted thereon a rotatable worm wheel l3 which is mounted on a screwed spindle [4, this spindle being in turn mounted in a tapped bearing l5 which is in turn secured to and forms part of the slideway l2, the lower end of the screwed spindle l4 being provided with a reduced plain section Ida disposed between a pair of collars IS, the reduced section of the spindle Ma being rotatably located within a bearing I! a secured to the rear face of the adjustable slide II. The worm wheel l3 meshes with a worm I I mounted on the spindle 9 which contains the axis of the pivotal segment 1 and which also carries at its outer end the hand wheel 18 by means of which the requisite adjustment of the slide II is effected relative to the slideway l 2 through the spindle 9, worm ll, worm wheel l3 and the screwed spindle M. The slide-' way I2 is provided with pairs of ears l2a which are engaged by studs IS the shanks whereof take into certain of a series of holes 20a formed in the traversable jockey 20 whichis mounted on the crosshead 21 of the machine. The holes 20a are disposed equidistant from each other in a circle which is struck from the axis of a headed pin 22 (see Fig. 3) which constitutes the pivotal mounting of the slideway I2 on the jockey 20. By this means the adjustable slide II and the slideway I2 by which it is carried can be turned about the axis 22 on the jockey 20. The traversable jockey 20 is adapted to move transversely or laterally. on the crosshead 2| of the machine, this operation being performed in any convenient manner; for example this can be effected by means of the screwed spindle connection 23 seen in Fig. 3, the particular form of this traverse not constituting a part of the present invention.
By this means it will be appreciated that by adjusting the position of the slide H and the parts mounted thereon, which adjustment is effected by means of the worm and worm wheel gearing operated by means of the hand wheel 18, the height of the grinding wheel 5 can be determined, while by pivotally adjusting and setting the segment I about its axis on the spindle 9 the angular position of the grinding wheel can be determined in relation to the surface of the work to be ground, so that the peripheral abrasive surface 5a of the grinding wheel may be set in a plane parallel to the plane of the surface of the work to be ground and any traverse which is subsequently imparted to the rotating grinding wheel by means of the aforesaid mounting on the crosshead 2| results in the grinding surface of the wheel moving in a plane which is always parallel to the surface of the work which is being ground, and thereby a true surface is generated irrespective of the amount or depth of the abrasion.
It will be appreciated that means are associated with the aforesaid adjustable parts of the machine to admit of their secure setting at the determined position and which admit of an observation of the setting.
It will also be appreciated that the pivotal axis of the segment I is disposed at right angles to and may intersect the longitudinal centreline of the slide ll, although in the illustrated embodiment of the invention the intersection is not shown to be on the longitudinal centreline of the slide.
Although the invention has been described as applied to the production of an undercut groove by means of a truncated conical grinding wheel, it is to be understood that other forms of groove and of grinding wheel may with equal facility obtain, for instance a parallel sided groove may be produced in the work by means of a cylindrical grinding wheel.
The spindle 6 of the grinding wheel 5 is rotated according to recognised practice by means of a belt drive 24 from the motor 25 which is carried on the segment 1.
I claim:
1. A grinding or abrading machine of the kind hereinbefore referred to, comprising a traversable jockey mounted on the crosshead of the machine, a pivotally mounted slideway adapted to be secured to the said jockey in variable angular relationships about the pivotal axis of connection of the slideway to the jockey, a slide mounted on the said slideway and capable of longitudinal adjustment and setting thereon, a segment mounted on the said slide and capable of arcuate motion and setting thereon, clamps mounted on the said adjustable slide for determining the requisite set position of the segment, and a rotary grinding member capable of variable setting relative to the slide so as to admit of the peripheral grinding face of the said member being aligned with the surface of the workpiece to be ground so as to generate a finished surface parallel to the said grinding face.
2. A grinding or abrading machine comprising, in combination, a crosshead having a jockey traversably mounted thereon, a slideway mounted on the jockey and capable of arcuate motion and setting in various angular positions on the jockey, a slide mounted on the slideway and capable of longitudinal adjustment and setting thereon, a support mounted on the slide and capable of arcuate motion and setting in various angular positions on the slide, and a rotary grinding member journaled on said support, whereby the peripheral grinding face of said member may be aligned with the surface to be ground so as to generate a finished surface parallel to said grinding face.
