Abstract

920,335. Seals. AMP Inc. July 29. 1959 [Aug. 19, 1958 ; Sept. 18, 1958], No. 26021/59. Class 146 (2). A seal for wrapping material, e.g. bags or tubes comprises a sheet metal member with overlapping edges tightly embracing the wrapping and comprising two or more pairs of substantially parallel plane portions of the member of substantially equal area, adjacent plane portions on opposite sides of the closure being interconnected by a rib or groove extending transversely wholly across the member. The sheet metal seal comprising a base 2, arms 4, 6 and a lining 10, which will cold flow under pressure, e.g. thermoplastic, rubber or soft metal, and having a bent-out portion 8, is wrapped around the bag or tube of, for example, plastic material, with the longer arm 4 underlying the arm 6 and the portion 8 forming a bell-shaped mouth, and pressed between dies to form a corrugation 20 extending transversely across the seal. A double corrugation may be imparted giving the seal a substantially Z-shaped longitudinal section. Alternatively, the seal is preformed with a rib 48 stopping short of the end of the longer arm, and the seal deformed between dies, the resulting closure having a substantially rectangular cross-section, Fig. 9 (not shown), with the rib 48 forming a peripheral bulge. In a modification of this latter seal, the arm 44 is not bent over at 46.
