Abstract

Hydroxyketones are prepared by reacting an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of a nitroalkanol, containing the grouping <FORM:0920143/IV(a)/1> and a total of 3, 4, or 5 carbon atoms, with an aqueous acid solution. Sulphuric, hydrochloric, oxalic, and phosphoric acids may be used with the metal salts of for example, 2-nitro-1, 3-propane-diol, 2-nitro-1-propanol, 2-nitro-1-butanol, 2-nitro-1,3-pentanediol and 2-nitro-3-butanol. The solid salt or aqueous solution of the nitro alkanol is added to the acid and the product may be recovered by adding excess base, filtering and passing the product through a strong cationic exchange resin. Examples describe the preparation of dihydroxyacetone, 1-hydroxy-2-propanone, 1-hydroxy - 2 - butanone, 1,3-dihydroxy-2-pentanone and 3-hydroxy-2-butanone.
