Abstract
The invention comprises mono- and diesters of D 5-pregnene-3b ,16a -diol-20-one but excludes the 3b -acetate, the 3b -formate-16a -acetate, the 3b -acetate-16a -formate, the 3b ,16a -diformate and the 3b ,16a -diacetate. They may be prepared from the known diol, 3-mono-acetate or 3,16-diacetate by standard esterification and hydrolysis techniques. The ester radicals may be derived from saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic aromatic or heterocyclic carboxylic acids, especially those containing a hydrophilic group such as a carboxyl group, and the invention also comprises salts e.g. with alkali metals or amines, of such esters; sulphonic acids or inorganic acids such as phosphoric of sulphuric acids. Detailed examples are provided.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise mono-or di-esters of D 5-pregnene-3b ,16a -diol-20-one (excluding the 3-mono- and 3,16-di-acetates, the 3 - formate - 16 - acetate, the 3 - acetate-16-formate and the 3,16-diformate) with saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic p carboxylic acids which may contain a hydrophilic group such as another carboxylic group, and salts, e.g. alkali metal or amine salts, of esters of the last-named type of acid, in admixture or conjunction with pharmaceutical excipients. The compositions, which are stated to have a sodiouretic effect, may also contain cortico-steroids or substituted cortico-steroids. The compositions, which may take the form of solutions, suspensions, emulsions, implantates, ampoules, tablets, dragees, salves or creams, may also contain preserving, stabilizing, wetting or emulsifying agents, salts for varying the osmotic pressure or buffer substances. Examples describe ampoules containing the 3-trimethylacetate-16-acetate and a trace of sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate, oil ampoules containing the dipropionate, tablets containing the di-hemisuccinate and ampoules containing the di-sodium salt of the last-named compound.
