Abstract

Aliphatic ketones are prepd. in high yield by passing vapours of an acid R.COOH where R is 7-12C alkyl over ZrO2 or ZrO2/Al2O3 (1:3) at 380-420 degrees C. The ketones are stabilisers for insecticides, additives for lubricating oils and varnishes, solvents of low volatility and plasticisers in the textile industry. The catalyst has a prolonged life and is easily regenerated.
