Abstract

919,519. Electrically controlled brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Sept. 12, 1961 [Oct. 25, 1960], No. 36562/60. Class 103 (1). A valve 16 for an electrically controlled brake comprises a movable member 21 controlling the degree of braking and means for moving the member 21 in a series of steps in response to impulsive energization or de-energization of a control circuit, each impulse corresponding to a definite step of movement. As shown, the upper chamber of the brake cylinder 12 is connected to a vacuum train pipe 10 via a check valve 13 and is also connected by a conduit 14 to the underside of a diaphragm 15. The chamber 18 above the diaphragm 15 is connected to the lower chamber of the brake cylinder by a conduit 19. A movable valve stem 21 carries an outer seat 22 for a spring-loaded valve plate 23 and an inner seat 26 for plate 23 is formed on a boss 27 carried by the diaphragm 15. The stem 21 is threaded and a nut 29 thereon is formed as two ratchet wheels 31, 32 which are driven by two magnets 33, 34 fitted with pawls 33a, 34a, one magnet being provided for movement in each direction. The brakes are applied by movement of a driver's valve handle which energizes the Application wire 35with a definite number of impulses. This in turn causes the application magnet 33 to rotate the ratchetwheel .31 a number of turns and so move the stem 21 downwards. Plate 23 is lifted off its outer seat 22 and the lower chamber of the brake cylinder is connected to atmosphere via a passage 25. When pressure .in chamber 18 is sufficient to overcome the spring 28 the valve can again lap off. Release of the brakes is caused by movement of the driver's valve handle to release position\which energizes in a series of impulses the release magnet 34. This causes the ratchet-wheel 32 to rotate and move the walve stem upwards so as to lift the plate 23 off its inner seat 26 and connect the upper and lower chambers of the brake cylinder. If the vacuum in the train pipe 10 falls to a dangerous level, switch 38 will break, which causes de-energization of emergency wire 37. The magnet valve 17 operates to vent the chamber below the diaphragm 15 to atmosphere, giving a full brake application by lifting plate 23 off its outer seat. The stepwise movable valve may be used in compressed air or continuous flow hydraulic brake systems.
