Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0919399/IV (b)/1> (wherein -NR1R2 is dialkylamino, alkyiaralkylamino or diaralkylamino, or R1 and R2 are, together with the nitrogen atom, linked to form a saturated heterocyclic radical which may contain other hetero atoms which when a nitrogen atom may be further substituted by an alkyl group of at most 3 carbon atoms or by a nicotinoylaminomethyl group) and salts thereof with organic and inorganic acids; and their preparation by reacting nicotinic acid amide directly or in stages with formaldehyde and the secondary amine NHR1R2. The amide may be reacted with formaldehyde (or a compound yielding it) and the amine simultaneously, or it may first be converted into the N-hydroxymethyl derivative or an ether or thioether thereof, or into the N-diethylaminomethyl derivative, by reaction with formaldehyde (or compounds yielding it) and if necessary reaction with alcohols, thioalcohols or with diethylamine, and the intermediate product so obtained, if necessary, further reacted with the appropriate secondary amine. 1,4-Bis(nicotinoylaminomethyl)-piperazine is prepared by heating 2 mols of nicotinic acid-N-(hydroxymethyl)-amide with 1 mol of piperazine. Detailed examples are given. N-(1,2-diphenylethyl)-N-methylamine is prepared by reaction of benzalmethylamine with benzyl magnesium chloride and subsequent hydrolysis.
