An enclosed alternator for vehicles such as railway rolling stock, and intended to be mounted in an exposed position, such as underneath the vehicle, is equipped with semi-conductor rectifiers 22 mounted in a separate compartment of the alternator housing, and cooled by cooling fins 23 mounted around the housing. The fins are insulated from the housing by an insulating layer 24.
