Abstract

919,041. Stuffing-box substitutes. GOETZEWERKE F. GOETZE A.G. Feb. 26, 1960 [March 25, 1959], No. 6878/60. Class 122 (5). The annular sealing lip 6 of a shaft seal is connected by a web 5 with a holding member 1, pressed against the shaft by a tubular spring 7 and formed from a resilient elastomer by moulding and vulcanization, the lip being moulded without any flashing on its sealing surface and subject to no further treatment which would remove the smooth skin produced by vulcanization. The lip may be formed by two inclined surfaces 8, 9 with the edge lying between the radial planes defining the external diameters of the cross-section of the spring 7. Alternatively, the inner periphery of the lip may be partcylindrical and two sealing edges provided. The holding member 1 consists of a sleeve 2, 3 moulded integrally with the web 5 and lip 6 and embracing a metal stiffener 1. The device may be produced in an injection-moulding process in which the resilient material is introduced into a mould through a nozzle in a zone spaced away from the lip.
